Katherine Townsend is an open government and open data expert in policy development, public-private-partnerships, and civic engagement. She supports civic tech movements across the globe to improve in-person and online connections for social entrepreneurship and local growth. Katherine currently works with the Code for Africa’s Open Government Fellows, SDG Global Data Partnership, and Data Collaboratives for Local Impact in East Africa. She co-developed the Global Open Data for Agriculture & Nutrition and the Africa Open Data Conference series which she continues to support. She previously worked for President Obama’s innovation & transparency initiative at the Department of State and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). In May 2012 she launched USAID’s Open Data Initiative to make transparent, useable, and accessible information the norm for international assistance. USAID’s open data policy went into operation in October 2014 and continues to apply across all programs and partners.
